The Thursday before pay day always seems to be the most desperate. You see things you want. You are informed you need money for things immediately. There's no gas in your car. You have nothing for lunch. The two Thursdays that fall immediately before we get paid every two weeks could quite possibly be named the absolutely most depressing days of the month. And it happens for 12 months a year. That equals 24 "Most Depressing Days EVER" per year. And if you're looking in my book, that's too many, because I have plenty of days that are depressing on their own merit, not thanks to lack of money, excitement, or drama. Actually, I think that my depressed days that are not money related are thanks to lack of drama and emotion. Anyways. I digress. Yesterday, as part of a ploy to get me to subscribe to Reader's Digest, they sent me a free copy of it. It was the "Canada Day" copy so the cover was all patriotic and promised interesting articles like "Seven Things You Can't Say Here", "Being Proud of My Nationalities", etc. As I opened the covers, I immediately turned to the joke and funny anecdote pages, and then got into some meatier articles which all seemed to have one theme running through them. Subtle anti-Canadian messages. Some things I found completely fine until I read through and then felt insulted. It's sorta like the anecdote that Bridget makes about Rebecca in Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, where she says you could have a perfectly reasonable, pleasant conversation with Rebecca but at the end of it, you feel strangely stung. That's how I felt about my RD. It's turned me off completely. I will not be subscribing. In other information to share with you, yesterday on the radio, I heard that they were charging a 26 year old man with some sort of unacceptable sexual charge based on the fact that a 12 (almost 13) year old girl met him on the internet and arranged for them to meet, telling him that she was 18. Now, if you're 26, you should check the facts out, but I actually feel sorry for the guy. There are a lot of 12 year old girls out there (my 12 year old sister is one of them), who look like they are 16-17. Furthermore, there are a lot of 18-19 year olds who still look 16-17, so I can see how this guy could justify that she was the age that she told him, in good faith, that she was. They had sex four times. Now answer me this -- where the hell were that girls parents?! I mean, when I was 12 and 13, I told guys on the internet that I was 16, but it was never more than some online flirting, I never met any of them and had sex with them, and also, they weren't 26 year olds, they were 16-18 year olds, and I did all of my interaction through my parent's email! For crying out loud. Maybe I'm too honest, but geepers. Also, I watched this new reality show, Brat Camp, which made me go "Huh?" People who have children with violent tempers that cannot be controlled, people who are afraid of their own children, who cannot keep control over their kids or whatever may not be good parents, let's face it. Occasionally, a kid will have had a bad experience and that turns them onto the bad stuff, so.. that's fine, but hello? Little girls who are spoilt to death, compulsive liars, etc - who have had nothing bad happen to them, who think they don't have to go to school because they're going to be a singer or whatever -- that's your own fault, don't come begging for help because you've ruined your own child. :P It almost made me want to do that sort of thing. I would have to get in shape, though, hiking and stuff. Hmmmmm. Anyways, that's it. Mostly.
